Curiosity stands central

About Marit

I have always been your typical ‘why?’-kid, fascinated by the world around me and curious as to how this works.

Not surprisingly, I made my job out of learning new things and asking the right questions. Specifically, I enjoy going on scientific endeavours and experimenting with new forms of media.

The writing biologist

Background

During my bachelor’s degree in (neuro) biology, my love for science communication grew stronger, and I decided to follow a master’s degree in this direction. I interned at the Dutch National Television (NTR), where my idea for an episode eventually ended up being broadcast on TV. Soon after my cum laude graduation, I started as a freelance science journalist.

My articles were published in, among others, Ukrant, Bionieuws, the NEWS-newsletter, and in Natuureiland Texel – a mix of specialised and general audiences. In 2026, I was awarded a FRONTIERS grant from the European Union, which allowed me to spend four months in a research institute in Valencia and independently produce my own podcast series.

Next to this, I was involved in (nature-) education projects for high schools, and I am an active member of the Association for Science Journalism and Communication (VWN). Here, I organise activities for starting colleagues, as part of the committee JongVWN.
